Behind the Lens: Capturing the Thrills of Godzone 2023

An insider's look at the exhilarating experience of filming New Zealand's most iconic adventure race.

My Highlights from GodZone Chapter 11

Third Time's the Charm

For the third consecutive year, I found myself behind the camera at Godzone, New Zealand's most iconic adventure race. This year, the race took on an even more special meaning as international teams made their return to the event post-Covid. From the 24th of February to the 5th of March 2023, participants navigated, trekked, mountain biked, kayaked, and canoed through some of New Zealand's most jaw-dropping landscapes in the Fiordland region.

Endless Inspiration

The challenges were immense, but so were the rewards. Witnessing the grit and determination of the competitors as they pushed their physical and mental limits was a constant source of inspiration. As a videographer, even when I felt exhausted, I was reminded that these racers were still going strong, with minimal sleep for an entire week.

Honing Skills in the Field

Filming an event like Godzone is a true test of a videographer's skills. You're forced to work quickly and rely on your instincts to capture shots on the move. The fast-paced, unpredictable nature of the race demands that you think on your feet and adapt to ever-changing circumstances. Additionally, being largely on your own requires self-reliance, a challenge that can be both tough and empowering.

A Visual Feast of Landscapes

The 2023 edition of the Godzone race showcased the incredible variety of New Zealand's scenery. Starting in the epic mountains and lakes of Fiordland, the race route took competitors through lush forests and picturesque farmland before reaching the coastal town of Riverton in Southland. Capturing this diverse range of landscapes was a visual feast, and I was stoked to document it all.

Reliable Gear and Self-Care

During the event, I relied on my rugged Sony a7S III and a1 mirrorless cameras, which were perfect for the job due to their lightweight and portable nature – essential when hiking in and out of remote locations. Keeping up with the fast-paced nature of the race meant I had to make sure I was eating and sleeping properly, much like the racers themselves.

Unforgettable Experiences

One of the highlights of my Godzone 2023 experience was flying in a helicopter over Mount Titiroa at sunrise. The calm, windless morning combined with a mesmerizing dusting of snow from the night before made for a truly awe-inspiring sight.

Reflections and Gratitude

Looking back, I'm stoked with the outcome of my shots. I managed to capture some truly epic moments that showcased the spirit and determination of the racers, as well as the jaw-dropping beauty of the Fiordland region. Being a part of Godzone 2023 was an unforgettable experience, and I'm incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to document such a remarkable event.
